Platform Engineering: Golden Paths Beat Mandates

Every enterprise we work with is somewhere on the platform engineering journey — usually stuck between "wiki full of standards nobody follows" and "platform team nobody wants to use." The difference between adopted and ignored platforms comes down to one principle: golden paths must be genuinely easier than alternatives.

What a golden path actually is

A templated, supported route from idea to production: scaffold a service with one command, get CI/CD, observability, security scanning and deployment infrastructure pre-wired. The developer writes business logic; the platform handles everything they'd otherwise copy-paste badly from the last project.

Make the right way the lazy way

  • Service scaffolding that produces a deployable hello-world in minutes, not days
  • Secrets, DNS, certificates and dashboards provisioned automatically
  • Upgrades delivered as pull requests to service repos, not migration mandates

Treat the platform as a product

The platform team's customers are developers. That means user research, adoption metrics, documentation quality and a roadmap driven by developer pain — not by infrastructure team preferences. Platforms built as products get adopted; platforms built as mandates get worked around.

Start smaller than you think

The successful platforms we've built started with one golden path for the most common service type, made it excellent, and expanded from demand. The failed ones tried to platform everything at once and delivered nothing well.
